Dallas, Texas

December 22, 2015 by WJMD Leave a Comment

We just got back from our stay in Dallas Texas. We spent some time in McKinney visiting my sister. The last three days of our vacation we stayed in the city. Here is our little whirlwind tour of Dallas.

Uptown

We rented a little apartment in Uptown through AirBnB. It was our first time using this company and we had a good experience.  Uptown ended up being a good location as it was in the middle of all the other parts of the city we walked to. The night life, bars and restaurant options were medium. But if you aren’t afraid of walking (or taking an Uber/cab if you have extra cash) it was only about 1-2 miles for some good food. We did find a cool coffee house called Crooked Tree Coffee House that made a good espresso.

Downtown

The walk to Downtown from uptown was about 2-ish miles and really easy. We stumbled on the Historic West End and got some of the best southern fried chicken I ever had at a little cafe called Ellen’s. In Downtown we had one main purpose and that was to see the Dealey Plaza (the JFK assassination site). The plaza actually has more to see than just the book depository and motorcade route. There is a landmark description of who George Dealey is, (and why this plaza was founded for him) Old pioneer cabin relics, the JFK memorial, the Old Red Museum, Holocaust museum, the Reunion Tower and more.

That being said, the Sixth Floor Museum is a must. You get to actually stand where Oswald did (or pretty close) to take the shots and see what he saw. After you do the tour inside the museum go walk to the grassy knoll. It looks exactly the same as every picture I have seen of it. If you feel extra brave jump into traffic and take a picture next to the “x” marking the location where Kennedy was hit.

Southside

After we explored Downtown we headed to Southside. A friendly bartender recommended this rooftop bar/hotel for great views of the skyline. The hotel is called NYLO and was a really cool place with funky decor. Next time we go I want to stay here! From Downtown it was another 2-ish miles and an easy walk.

Deep Ellum

Our second day in Dallas we just started walking and ended up in Deep Ellum. This is by far my favorite place in the city. It is arty, weird, unique and had some of the best BBQ we tasted in Dallas. The Pecan Lodge was recommended to us and by the line out the door it lived up to its reputation. We lucked out and sat at the bar without waiting in line 🙂 They had a $28 single beef rib ($11 per pound) on their menu. We decided to splurge and it was a good choice. So good.

We wandered around and ended up at a dive bar called Double Wide. This was another good find! Get the Yoohoo Yeehaw, their version of an iced white Russian.

Ran-Tong: Save & Rescue Elephant Center

December 5, 2014 by WJMD Leave a Comment

rantong-6 When we booked our tickets to South East Asia the next thing we did was research elephant riding.

What’s not commonly known by tourists is that quite a few of the “Elephant Camps” in Thailand do not treat their elephants well. We knew we wanted to find a place that our money would help support a positive lifestyle for the “tourist” elephants.

We found Ran-Tong and were extremely impressed with the care and quality in which they treated their elephants. This camp (more like a farm) was far from the city and crowds and was caring for 18 rescued elephants, including one cute baby. It was located about an hour up the mountain outside of Chiang Mai. When we arrived a little baby elephant came running over to greet us!

Our elephant was 35 and named Thong In. We had a fabulous experience at this elephant camp!

Hanoi

hanoi-3

We flew from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. It was a two hour flight and cost about $100 per ticket. We got into Hanoi about midnight, a little later than we would have liked to, but ended up finding a room at the Lake Side Hostel in the historical center of Hanoi (for reference we do not recommend this hostel).

Hanoi has been a thriving city for over 1000 years. It has served as the capital through French Indochina, the capital of northern Vietnam during the Vietnam war and continues to serve as the capital today.

Our hostel was located near Hoan Kiem Lake “Lake of the Restored Sword“. Legend has it that the emperor Le Loi was boating on the lake when all the sudden a Golden Turtle God surfaced and requested to have his magic sword “Heaven’s Will”. Heaven’s Will was gifted to the emperor from the Dragon King (a Vietnamese local God), during his revolt from the Chinese Ming dynasty. The emperor released this magical sword to the golden turtle and renamed the lake commemorate this event. In the middle of the lake now stands the Turtle Tower to symbolize the history.

Don’t forget to check out the Jade island and the temple of the jade mountain on the north side of the lake. This temple was constructed in the 13th century and honors military leaders. Jade island is connected to the shore by the red bridge.

When we were walking around we saw many Vietnamese students who had just graduated and where taking pictures with family and friends. We couldn’t help it and took some portraits of them too:)

Ha Long Bay

bay-16

This is a very cool (and touristy) place to stay and check out while in Vietnam. There are two sides of the city to stay in when visiting Ha Long Bay, Bai Chai and Tran Hung Dao.  We stayed on the Tran Hung Dao side near the beach Bach Dang, this side has epic views of the islands in the bay and a sweet market to get all kinds of food and souvenirs. Our hotel was excellent if you are looking for something a little more than a hostel. It included breakfast in the mornings, a pool, a bar/restaurant on the top floor. The location was perfect and in walking distance to a nice indoor mall, the outdoor market, the beach and tons of authentic food and shops.

The island tour is the main attraction in Ha Long Bay, however be very cautious of where you book from. Some places (like our hotel) will charge you close to $35 per person and you will still have to pay for your cab, buy your own lunch and pay to visit many of the stops on the tour. If you catch a cab to the Bai Chai side you can book your tour right from the source and it will only cost $4 per ticket (you will still have to pay for some of the stops, but you will save over $30 per person). In total, the tour should not cost more than $15 per person and include all the stops, lunch and your cab.

The tour is nice and we made stops at a few different caves, saw some of the more famous island configurations (fighting cocks, dog, cat, and a few more), we also stopped at a floating fish market where you could buy some fish for lunch and the deck hands would cook it up for you.The final stop on the boat tour was Tip Top Beach.

At one of the stops you could get on a paddle boat or kayaks and check out some cool caves and caverns within the islands. We opted to get a paddle boat because for the same price you could have someone else paddle you around. Our paddler was extremely nice and told us all about the caves. She lives on the bay in a floating village and in this picture you can see where her and her family live in the boat behind her.

Funny Memory:
We met some fine folks from England on our boat tour and had a great time talking about all our travels through south east Asia. Towards the end of our tour they decided we all needed a bottle of vodka to finish among friends. After ordering the bottle from the deck hand (that was on the menu) we where informed they did not have any but they where going to flag down another boat and get one.

After making a u-turn and flagging down another boat we came in to dock with them. This maneuver did not go as planned! We ended up t-boning this boat at almost full speed. As our boat rammed into this other boat, full of tourist, we heard a loud crash and cracking of wood. As we bounced off the other boat we could see a huge dent with splinters in there hull. The guide then proceeded to inform us he was not able to get any vodka…
